Microvision, Inc. (NASDAQ: MVIS) engages in the development of mobile display technology called PicoP. The PicoP based device enables cinema-sized viewing of multimedia contained in cell phones, cameras, MP3 players, laptops and other similar devices. The company says the technology can also be used to develop projection displays in vehicles, as well as wearable displays. The PicoP platform based prototype, called SHOW, was unveiled at the 2008 Consumer Electronic Association (CES) Trade Fair. The full-color laser projector is sized like a handheld computer, fully self-contained and battery operated. The company also manufactures and sells bar code scanner products. Recently, as announced, they signed a master distribution agreement with Brightpoint for the company's laser based bar code scanner - ROV. The association will undoubtedly add significantly to the company's sales, as Brightpoint is one of the largest distributors of wireless devices for such companies as: Nokia, Motorola, Verizon, Cingular and AT&T.
On April 24, 2008, the company announced their operational results for the first quarter of the year. According to the SEC filing Microvision's revenue from operations totaled $2.6 million - an 18% increase compared to the same period a year ago. Despite the increase the company's still incurred a net loss of $7.1 million compared to a loss of $6 million for the first quarter of 2007. Microvision's balance sheet doesn't look too bad. The company still has $35.8 million in cash and marketable securities which is adequate to sustain the company for at least another half a year.
The company expects to launch PicoP based products in the 4th quarter of 2008. Thy have signed agreements with two high volume manufacturing partners, which will help PicoP products to enter the market more easily.
It's still too early to predict the possible impact of PicoP products release to market. However, the recent announcements have already given Microvision's stock a boost. As the company gives further updates on their progress in PicoP development, investors should expect at least a short term increase in share price.
