Generex Biotechnology Corporation (NASDAQ: GNBT, GNBT message board) has recently published the results of their long term studies on the effectiveness of their Ii-Key/HPV immunotherapeutic vaccine. The anti-cancer directed medicine is based on the Ii-Key platform technology developed by Antingen Express Inc. - a wholly owned subsidiary of Generex.
The exact results were published in a scientific journal called Vaccine, but were more interested in the financial meaning of these results. Apparently the vaccine has shown expected results in immunized mice, but failed at some parts of the study so the possibility of marketable the medicine is still far away.
Another important issue achieved by this study was the possible application of the Ii-key technology. It challenges the currently unmet medical needs of successfully curing the already progressed cancer. The market niche for effective vaccines of the kind is currently rather empty. However, the company is just taking the first steps in the field of immunomedicine, so their ability to quickly fulfill the market needs is rather limited.
As are most development stage companies, Generex is losing vast amounts of money. Marketing the already developed Glucose RapidSpray product is not sufficient to cover the R&D and SGA expenses. The melting cash resources forced the company to recently issue even more stock, but at least the gathered $10.8 million will help them last another quarter.
Generex stock added 5.2% after the announcement of new study results, but isn't likely to show large gains in the near future.
