In 2005, the U.K. Department of Health sought to unify the supply of oxygen to National Health Service patients in England and Wales. The previous system used pharmacies to supply cylindered gases, while oxygen concentrators were supplied via regional contracts with homecare providers. Under the revised system, which came into effect on February 1, 2006, homecare providers supply cylindered gas and liquid oxygen as well as oxygen concentrators directly to patients.
